‘Thank You’ to one and all

A trio of brave youngsters stole the show at the Borough’s Big Thank You Awards, sharing the stage to pick up a joint honour.

On a night of tears, laughter and celebration, Angel Sutton, Georgie Craig and Jake Newlove all took home the Courage Over Adversity award after the judging panel said it was “impossible” to separate them.

But it was “brave and battling” YMCA volunteer Jake, a 12-year-old with Nephrotic Syndrome, who won The Scarborough News award.

Six-year-old Angel also received another honour, picking up the Max Payne award, named after the legendary Scarborough photographer.

Her mum Tina said the award was overwhelming, adding: “Angel has become a bit of a celebrity around here, but we are just an ordinary family and I didn’t expect this at all.”

The Spa Complex Ocean Room was packed for Tuesday night’s McCain-sponsored ceremony, with over a dozen awards handed out.

Philanthropist Maureen Robinson was recognised for donating a statue trail by winning the Borough Pride award.

The pensioner was handed the honour by Howard Foster from The University of Hull, who sponsored the award.

Mrs Robinson, who attended alongside husband and fellow nominee Michael, said the award was a “great surprise”.

She added: “I feel like I am in a dream world.”

The highly-competitive Choices Health Club Volunteer of the Year award was won by a visibly delighted Ron Baxter, who beat off competition from over a dozen nominees.

Teenager Vicky Crawforth was the only winner to know before the night that sh had landed an award.

She received Yorkshire Coast Homes’ Young Carer/Helper prize.

One of the borough’s biggest business success stories in recent years is the clothing firm Sik Silk.

The firm’s founding friends capped off an incredible 12 months by picking up the 
McClarrons Insurance Young Entrepreneur gong.

Big hearted Natalie and Gareth Davies scooped two awards at the ceremony, winning the YH Training Services Uniformed Group prize for their work with Scarborough Sea Cadets.

They were also picked by current Mayor of the Borough Cllr Pat Marsburg to receive the Mayor’s Award.

Talented singer Alanis Beckitt entertained the crowd, and the St Augustine’s teenager also won Yorkshire Coast College’s Most Deserving Pupil award.

Another youngster, Conor Skelton, won the Shoreline Suncruisers Arts and Performance award, picking it up from the firm’s founder Jack Stephenson MBE.

Diane Glanvill did Filey proud by winning the Good Deeds prize for going “above and beyond”, bringing the Boyes-sponsored award back to the town.

Becky Holder, who has raised a fortune for Martin House, won the AW Joinery Charitable Fundraising award.
