The site, which will include a new stadium for Scarborough Athletic, is part of a triple construction project alongside the new Coventry University Scarborough Campus and the Scarborough University Technical College.

The Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough, Cllr Tom Fox, buried a time capsule containing items that tell the story of the project and important information about organisations that will be the eventual users of the Leisure Village once it is completed.

The aim of the time capsule is to reflect how the project and organisations are in 2016.

The time capsule will have a burial life of fifty years with instructions left for the next generation to bring the time capsule to the surface in 2066 to reveal the history of the development.

Scarborough Leisure Village, which will be home to an eight lane 25-metre Olympic Legacy swimming pool and learner pool, a four-court sports hall, squash courts, a 60-station fitness suite, an aerobics studio and a new ground for Evo-Stick First Division North team, Scarborough Athletic Football Club, was given the final green light just before Christmas.

Dave Holland, chairman of Scarborough Athletic Football Club said: “It’s a personal dream coming true and I am just trying to work out the number of sleeps until we walk out at Weaponness.”

It is anticipated that the construction will be completed in summer 2017.
