Tour legend can’t wait to see Scarborough

Five-time Tour de France winner Bernard Hinault has told The Scarborough News he cannot wait for tomorrow’s race to begin.

Speaking at today’s eve of tour launch event the French cyclist was in expectant mood.

He is not sure where he will be along the route but he has confirmed that he will be at the start of the race in Bridlington and at the finish line in Scarborough.

He said he has not been to Scarborough before but he thinks this is a ‘beautiful part of the world and the countryside is going to be spectacular’.

“Being near the sea will also be very special,” he added.

“At every stage there are going to be parts that are magnificent.

“Being in England will be different to being in France, and the weather is an important factor.”

He hopes that everyone comes out to enjoy the event.

Bernard is one of only six cyclists to have won all three Grand Tours, and the only cyclist to have won each more than once. He won the Tour de France in 1978, 1979, 1981, 1982 and 1985
