The driver who died after his car was struck by a rush-hour passenger train at Scampston yesterday has been named.

Eric Ireland, from Moorsholme, in Scampston, died at Ivy Lea rail crossing in Scampston, near Malton, on Wednesday morning, say British Transport Police.

No passengers were injured in the crash, although the driver of the train is being treated for shock.

The family of Mr Ireland, a local farmer, have been notified and specialist officers are providing support to them.

The train involved was the 08:48 Scarborough to Liverpool Lime Street TransPennine Express Service.

Cheif Inspector Derek O’Mara said: “The police investigation into the incident is ongoing.

“Officers are working hard to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the vehicle came to be on the tracks at the time, and are working closely with colleagues from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch to determine exactly what led to the collision.”
