Fatal motorcycle collision on the A171 Scarborough to Whitby road

A motorcyclist from Scarborough has died in a horror smash which saw a 37-year-old arrested following a manhunt in nearby woodland.

The crash, which happened at about 5.45pm on Saturday (July 27, 2013) on the A171 Scarborough to Whitby Road, near the Flask Inn, involved a black Citroen car and a motorbike.

The man riding the bike, from Scarborough and aged in his late 30s, suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Officers are supporting his family at this distressing time.

A team of officers and search dogs were called in to hunt for the occupants of the Citroen car who departed on foot into the nearby Harwood Dale Forest following the collision.

A 37-year-old man from the Cleveland area was located and arrested at 9.30pm. He has been taken into custody for questioning.

The scene of the crash remained closed until midnight while officers continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident and to allow for the vehicles to be recovered.
