Flood warning in place as River Esk burst its banks near Whitby

The B1410 at The Carrs between Briggswath and Ruswarp has been shut by North Yorkshire County Council as the River Esk has burst its banks.

A flood warning for the River Esk from Briggswath to Ruswarp is also now in force. The level of the River Esk at Briggswath is rising due to persistent rain overnight on Thursday night and into Friday morning.

Government officials are expecting flooding to property, road and farmland today with the areas most at risk around Ruswarp Pleasure Boat Ticket Office.

Local officials are closely monitoring the situation with response staff on hand. You are advised to avoid low lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low lying road near rivers, which may be flooded.

A section of the carriageway on the B1416 Oakley Bank has been damaged because of the heavy rainfall.

In the meantime, traffic management has been arranged and drivers are being asked to take care in the area.

A spokesperson for the council said: "Please remember, where possible you should remain at home. If you have to travel, stay local and look to reduce the number of journeys you make."
