The latest move, by rail operator Northern, has seen the train service from Esk Valley stations to Whitby reduced to just one train a day in the evening - and residents along the line are baffled by the decision.

Esk Valley Community Rail Partnership Chairman Alan Williams said: “While we understand the need to discourage leisure travel at the moment, just one train a day in the evening is of no use to anyone, not even key workers, people who must travel or others wishing to return to work.

"We do not understand the reason for this further reduction at a time when elsewhere train services are being gradually increased.

"We are pressing Northern to restore a morning service to Whitby from the ten Esk Valley stations as quickly as possible and for an assurance that services will in future be restored in

line with those elsewhere”.
