Diversions are in place at the Aquarium Top roundabout and at Grosvenor Road.

During the work to the bridge, the existing paint surfaces have been removed before contractors applied a new three-coat paint system in the bridge’s classic dark green to protect its structure.

In total over the last six years North Yorkshire County Council will have spent nearly £4 million on the bridge’s first complete refurbishment since 1933. In that year the bridge, which first opened in 1865, was rebuilt to accommodate the increase in motorised traffic.
