Travellers flocked to Seamer ready for the traditional horse fair over the weekend

The official site was in the same field as last year, off the B1261 between Seamer and Crossgates.

For many travellers, this meet up is an always an important horse fair to add to the travelling calendar.

Traveller, Danny Smith, said: “I remember coming here since I was 11. We [Danny and his brother David] remember coming when it was in the village when everyone came here.”

Numbers at the once well established and thriving meet up are now dwindling down each year.

Last year, it was reported that some travellers left the site early as they felt as if they had been not been made to feel welcome.

However, the events of last year have not stopped families attending.

Garath Coates, owner of the caravan featured above, says he has owned his living wagon for six year and attends most horse fairs including Seamer and Appleby.

The origin of the fair dates back to the Royal Charter issued in November 1382 by Richard II.

It was not until the 1900s that the fair then became associated with travellers.

After a pitch battle in 1911 travellers were forbidden to enter the village or camp on the green.

Seamer Horse Fair is a “tradition” in some of the travelling families as it provides an opportunity for families to meet up for the weekend.

The annual event passed by without incidents this year.
