Tree due to be cut down

WORK on felling Irton’s controversial beech tree was due to start any time from this morning onwards.

North Yorkshire County Council representatives visited the site on Friday and read out a statement, saying that anyone who got in the way of work could face prison.

They did not give an exact indication of when the tree would be cut down, but said it would be “some time in the week commencing Monday October 3”.

The council obtained a High Court injunction allowing them to fell the tree, which is said to have been damaging a nearby property.
