Coastguards have stopped searching the dense woodland around Scarborough’s Cornelian Bay area after reports of a man shouting for help.
Members of the public, including two walkers and workman at Osgodby Top, reported hearing the voice of a man who sounded in distress. The first report was at 1pm today.
Deputy station officer Tony Dyer said that no search of anyone was found and the coastguards have now left the scene.
He added: “Police have called in the Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team to see if they can locate anyone.”
Anyone with information is asked to call 101.
