Jeremy Clarkson is said to have launched a tirade of verbal abuse at Oisin Tymon, before launching a 30 second physical assault on him after being told he couldn’t have steak and chips for tea.

The presenter and Top Gear crew were at a North Yorkshire hotel following a day’s filming when Clarkson was told the hotel had stopped serving hot food.

Lord Hall, the Director General of the BBC, made his decision today (Wednesday) after considering the findings of an internal investigation.

He said he “had not taken the decision lightly” and recognised it would “divide opinion” but added that “a line had been crossed” and he couldn’t condone the incident.

It emerged that Clarkson reported himself to BBC bosses not the producer involved.

It is not the first time Clarkson has been in hot water.

Last year he was handed points for the first time in his driving career after being caught speeding on the M1 while en route back to London after a day filming in Whitby for the current series.

He also reportedly pranged the BMWi8 he was testing near to the bandstand before enjoying the local delicacy - fish and chips from Mister Chips on Church Street.

He revealed the fine in his column for The Sun newspaper where he had previously written about the number of speed cameras he had spotted on his journey from Whitby back to the capital.

At the time he said: “Last month I wrote in a blind fury about how many speed cameras I’d encountered on a drive from Whitby to London. Well, it seems one of them got to me.

“Sadly, I was going too quickly for the speed awareness course to be an option. Which means I’m getting some points on my licence. My first in 30 years.”

There has been a huge outpouring of support for Top Gear frontman and it is expected the show will continue without him.
