VOLUNTEERS were recognised for their efforts with long service awards from Macmillan Cancer Support.

The honours were presented during a get-together at the Palm Court Hotel in Scarborough.

The charity gave awards to nine volunteers who have helped out for five years or more.

Macmillan cancer information nurse Nicola Cox said: “All our volunteers have been with us for longer than five years, so this is to recognise their continued support.

“Without them the service just wouldn’t run and we are so grateful for their help.”

The volunteering role entails meeting and greeting people who attend Macmillan’s drop-in services. They are there to help put people at their ease and help serve refreshments.

The presentations were made during an afternoon tea, which also allowed volunteers from different areas such as Scarborough, Whitby and Pickering to meet up.

Representatives from York Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust were also at the event.

During the afternoon volunteers also took part in a training session on communication skills and confidentiality.

Mrs Cox said: “It was a lovely, relaxed get-together. The volunteers really appreciated the time to meet people from other areas and spend time together in this way.

“Volunteers really complement what we can offer and we are so proud of all their achievements.

“They’re such lovely people and we hold them all in high regard.”
