Walking for Amnesty

THE Scarborough branch of the human-rights group Amnesty International is staging a social and fundraising walk on Tuesday July 26.

Author, geologist and Amnesty member Roger Osborne will lead the walk and talk about the rocks and landscape of the south bay. The walk will begin outside the main entrance of the Spa at 6.30pm.

Afterwards, walkers will be invited for food and drinks at the home of Mike Gordon, who chairs the branch.

“We will ask for a small donation to cover costs and raise funds for Amnesty,” says Mr Gordon.

The branch will be taking part in the worldwide celebration of Amnesty’s 50th anniversary on October 29.

Ahmed Khaleel will talk about the academic front-line in Iraq and being a professional life in Iraqi higher education.

Dr Jay Prosser, reader in humanities at Leeds University, will give a presentation on his recent co-authored book, Picturing Atrocity: Photography in Crisis. Royalties from the book are being donated to Amnesty.
