Earlier, at 2.49pm, Whitby and Staithes Coastguard teams received a call expressing concern for a swimmer opposite the Metropole at Whitby.

Before reaching the scene, it was confirmed that the swimmer had left the water, was safe and well and no assistance was required.

If you see someone in difficulty at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
