Thunderstorms are forecast for much of the UK - Will the Yorkshire Coast be affected?

The Met Office has issued a warning that some places across the UK are likely to see severe thunderstorms in the next few days, but there is significant uncertainty in location and timing.

What to expect

There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes and large hail.

Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to public transport.

Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and increased chance of accidents.

There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life

Yorkshire Coast Forecast for the next few days

Sunny with occasional thundery showers. Warm and humid.

Today:

Thundery showers will gradually die out through the morning, leaving some bright or sunny spells. Further scattered showers and thunderstorms are then likely to developing through the afternoon. Feeling warm and humid. Maximum temperature 27 °C.

Tonight:

Showers dying out this evening, then staying dry. Turning cloudier and cooler in the east, with mist or fog patches developing along the coast. Warm overnight. Minimum temperature 17 °C.

Wednesday:

Cloud burning back toward the coast through the morning. Dry with sunny spells inland, but some thundery showers possible in the west later. Warm inland. Maximum temperature 28 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Dry but rather cloudy Thursday, warm in developing sunny spells with isolated thundery showers possible. Increasingly cloudy through Friday and Saturday, with isolated showers as temperatures return close to normal.
