An operation to keep the town centre safe this Christmas is well under way.
Operation Rascal is a joint project between Scarborough Anti-Theft Group, North Yorkshire Police and Scarborough Council’s CCTV department.
Cllr Janet Jefferson, chairman of the anti-theft group, said: “Operation Rascal is already in motion and we’re seeing results. It’s a multi-agency scheme and the aim is to promote a safe festive season by eliminating shoplifting and anti-social behaviour. We would ask people to be vigilant as there have been some purse thefts and we would also ask people to be careful when using cash machines. There will be a strong police presence in town, with both uniformed and plain clothed officers in the area.”
Cllr Jefferson added that the scheme has been going since 1995 and has been very successful. She said: “We want to make Scarborough a pleasurable place to come to.” Cllr Jefferson is pictured with Alan Bruce and the Operation Rascal team outside the Brunswick Centre 155014
