Adding to the tourism mix

Re the Futurist Theatre:

I am writing to you as the owner of Tricolos Restaurant to ask you to review the case for maintaining the Futurist Theatre as a major live entertainment venue, which has the potential to greatly benefit our town.

The Gary Barlow concert can be no better example of the ‘Futurist effect’ in boosting what has become a depressed off-season tourism economy.

With snow on the ground and against all the odds, our hotels were full and restaurants fully booked, this is no coincidence and is repeated on every occasion that top acts are secured for the Futurist.

I appreciate that this is a complicated and highly charged political issue with wider financial implications for Scarborough Borough Council. But I would ask you to stand back and take a hard look at the reality.

The town’s outdoor and Spa theatres have now been renovated and neither can offer an all year round facility such as the Futurist and surely a redeveloped Futurist can only add to the Scarborough mix.

The one thing we do not need at the moment are more shops, or at worst another closed derelict empty building as we seem to have more than our fair share of these in Scarborough already.

I do not wish to antagonise you but hopefully point out that there is a viable reason to continue to seek a future for this valuable asset and financial multiplier.

One interesting fact that you may like to consider is that in the world’s fastest growing tourism sector ocean cruising, the largest amount of space given is to the ship’s theatre provision.
