Congratulations to Scarborough Council for deciding to put in a bid to host the start or finish of the 2016 Tour de Yorkshire.

Last year the Tour went through Hunmanby. At first some people were sceptical, but it certainly turned out to be a value for money decision by SBC for our village.

People worked together with real community spirit and pride, Businesses and local groups organised events, co-ordinated and publicised by the parish council. Individual residents joined in, putting out bunting and bikes along the whole route. Our primary school children lined the street on the day, as well as working on themes connected with the race and producing imaginative artwork. Yorkshire Coast College art students created a large mural to welcome the riders on the road to the village.

Hunmanby was thronged with visitors, we were featured on Look North and the blue and yellow flags, bikes and bunting have continued to brighten the village through the summer.

The event also definitely put Hunmanby on the map, highlighting its position as the Gateway to the Wolds from the coast. Many visitors commented on how lovely the village was and that they were previously unaware of its range of shops and attractions. There has also been a noticeable increase in cycling tourism and therefore trade for the local economy.

If it can do the same for other villages in the borough next year, then it is not just Scarborough town itself that will reap the benefit of the Tour.
