Cycle race: Money could be better spent

I would like to comment on the council’s decision to spend £135,000 on the Tour de Yorkshire next year, not to be confused with the Tour de France.

Cllr Michelle Donohue-Moncrieff states that this is a third tier event with none of the big name riders taking part. I remember in the 1960s and 1970s the Tour of Britain Milk Race visiting Scarborough for two days on an annual basis, and to my recollection there were no long term benefits for the town apart from accommodation for the competitors and their entourage.

I disagree with Cllr Derek Bastiman when he states pound for pound this will be one of the best decisions this council will ever make. I think one of the best decisions the council could make is spending that £135,000 on updating our indoor swimming pool which is going to benefit not only locals and visitors alike.
