Goalkeeper netted gum

RE: HARRY Hough.

Mr Russell’s poem ‘The cruel hand of fate‘ in a recent Trader Poet’s Corner brought back youthful memories of my grandfather taking me to Barnsley’s football ground at Oakwell and seeing goalkeeper Harry Hough (or ‘arry ‘uff as I would say!) throwing packets of beech nut chewing gum into the back of the net.

Presumably chewing helped him concentrate. This must have been around 1950. Thanks

Mr Russell.
