heartbreak over ground

RE memories of the McCain Stadium.

My earliest memory of the McCain Stadium was when Boro entertained Red Star Belgrade in July 1990, who at that time were one of the top clubs in European football. Even though it was a pre-season friendly and Boro lost, the game was played in good spirit, on a lovely summer’s evening and there was a great atmosphere too.

I also recall being at the Wrexham match later that year on a horrible Friday night. Only 625 fans turned up (which I think is a record lowest football league attendance) due to the appalling weather, it was raining heavily and blowing a gale. I had to take refuge in the shed and remember being bloody frozen as I had gone to the game whilst still in my school uniform.

The game shouldn’t have gone ahead.

Even though chances of one of the new Scarborough clubs returning to the ground, always diminished every year since the club folded, it’s heart breaking to see the stadium being demolished and it’s hard to think that in four weeks time, there will be absolutely nothing left of it.
