Housing development is wrong on every level

OPEN letter to Scarborough Borough Council Planning:

Re decision no. 10/00903/OL granting outline planning permission to Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes Yorkshire, dated July 5 2011.

We, the Cayton Residents Action Group, have spent two years trying to explain to yourselves and to Yorkshire Water the folly of this development with regard to flood problems and the possible contamination to the bore hole very near to the site of the building works, knowing as we all do that not only Cayton uses this water source but in fact much of Scarborough and the surrounding district is also fed from this bore hole.

We have always felt that this issue is therefore much larger than other proposed, and in many cases accepted though very unpopular developments.

We now find within your document decision No 10/00903/OL that, of 43 conditions, no less than eight make direct reference to protect the Yorkshire Water public supply abstractions at Cayton. For reference these are paragraphs 19, 21, 22, 23, 24, 27, 28 and 29.

We have said before and must say again, any, however slight chance there may be to contaminate the drinking water of our area, not just Cayton but most of Scarborough and district, must not be permitted. The planning at Scarborough Borough Council know that the risks are genuine, and that no-one in Scarborough and district can possibly want to take this sort of risk.

We feel the time has come to accept that this development is wrong on every level and we at Cayton call for this decision to be rescinded and another site found.
