Letter: Early Zeppelin model was destroyed by fire on test

Following the very interesting Nostalgia article in the September 3 issue, it might be of interest that the photo does not show a Zeppelin of the type which was successful in bombing Britain in World War One.

What it depicts is an early Zeppelin (L2) which was destroyed by fire on October 17, 1913, killing all the crew while on test for the German navy.

Rising too fast hydrogen gas was vented too close to the hot engines which simply exploded, a design fault which was swiftly corrected in the subsequent airships.
