It is clear that Cllr Dilys Cluer and the Green Party don’t understand how the National Grid works. I have explained in previous letters to The Scarborough News how the National Grid has to balance demand and supply at the flick of a switch.
The National Grid cannot rely on the vagaries of wind, solar or tidal to supply extra demand. The main generators of electricity are coal, nuclear, gas and hydro. Only gas and hydro can supply extra capacity at the ‘flick of a switch’. Coal and nuclear power stations need time to build up to full production because they use steam turbines to drive the alternators. Because Britain only has one hydro plant of any size the burden lies solely with the gas powered generators to be turned on at the flick of a switch.
North Sea oil and gas production is struggling to supply our needs which is why we have a pipeline running from Norway to the Yorkshire coast. I believe we import 10 per cent of our gas from Norway.
After the disastrous energy policy of the coalition government headed by Ed Davy, the new Conservative government seems to be getting more of a grip and hopefully understanding the dire position that Britain’s energy supply is in as a result of the deluded ideas of the last energy minister Ed Davy.
In my opinion the Green Party has accelerated the need to frack for gas to keep the lights on.
Out of curiosity I recently attended a ‘Frack-Free Scarborough’ meeting at Scarborough Library and couldn’t believe the amount of mis-information given out at that meeting.
Horror stories about the amount of water pollution that would be created also earth quakes etc.
A young mother from Kirbymisperton terrified that her children would be poisoned by the water coming from her taps.
I pointed out that most of the water in the Vale of Pickering is already contaminated with nitrates and is acidic.
I know this from my own experience because at my previous house I had my own borehole and the filters needed to purify the water. This is the job that Yorkshire Water does to ensure that the water coming from your tap is safe.
UKIP put forward the most sensible energy policy in their manifesto prior to the last election. It pointed out that for every wind turbine, solar panel and tidal power generator, you need to match that with a grown-up power station that can supply power when it is needed and not when it is available
The company that will soon be fracking gas from Kirbymisperton are, I believe, the same company responsible for the gas-powered generating plant next to the railway line just east of Knapton silo.
Whilst renewable energy has its place none are compatible with the National Grid.
Billions of pounds/euros have been wasted through the green taxes that have been collected in Europe. Germany’s power supply is a complete mess.
The shining example in Europe is France. As far as I know it is the only country in the world able to export electricity profitably. Also that country is the driving force to develop nuclear fusion which is the real answer to the world’s energy crisis. No expensive fuel needed, no nuclear waste and France is developing it at the moment.
There is no basis for Cllr Cluer’s wind turbines that last for 25 years. The only history so far is that they can be struck by lightning and several have caught fire.
