Letter: Parking charges could drive town’s business away

The director general of the British Retail Consortium forecasts a large number of shops on the high streets will close in the next couple of years. Surely the best way to hasten that in the area covered by Scarborough Borough Council is to put up car parking charges.

Cllr Backhouse argues that competitors have increased their charges and charge in the winter. Have Tesco? Has Meadowhall? No. Why? Because they know that it is the quickest way to turn the public away.

Surely Scarborough Borough Council should be shouting from the roof tops that the borough is a fantastic place to visit and low car parking charges are part of the offer.
