How sad to read that Scalby School has decided to join the headlong rush towards academisation.
Basically, this means it will now be funded by central government and not County Hall, but more pertinently its timetable and learning agenda will be set by politicians not educationists.
Headteacher David Read insists that nothing will change in the way of teaching and the professional status of staff and, in the short term, he may be right. But he knows that ‘he who pays the piper calls the tune’ and once Whitehall has academised the nation in keeping with its neo-liberal agenda, it can impose its terms on all aspects of public sector schooling.
In other words, if you don’t do as we say then we reduce or abandon your funding.
We can expect Scalby’s publicity to move up a gear now as those who run academies never tire of telling us what wonderful places they are.
I am sure I speak on behalf of several retired teachers who thank the Lord that they are no longer working in schools and at the mercy of the political class.
