Peter Jaconelli: Attempting to rewrite history

I am frankly appalled by the decision of the Scarborough Borough Council to remove Peter Jaconelli’s name from the roll of mayors in the town hall and to resolve that he should never again be referred to as a former mayor.

I have no quarrel with the decision to strip him of his civic honours, but Peter Jaconelli was elected as mayor and served in that office in 1971/2. This is fact, it happened and the attempts of the council to re-write history by pretending his year as mayor never took place is deplorable.

The council’s decision to declare him a non-person and air-brush him from the borough’s history is chillingly reminiscent of George Orwell’s ‘1984’ and the policies of the Stalinist Soviet Union.
