I am writing to thank residents in the borough for their previous support of the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal and would like to call on that kind generosity once again.
Since 1921, the Royal British Legion’s mission has been to help those members of the serving and ex-service community who needed it. More than 90 years on it continues to support the welfare, interests and memory of those who are serving or who have served in the Armed Forces.
The Poppy Appeal provides the main source of funds to maintain the legion’s many welfare and benevolent schemes in which more than 100,000 people are looked after each year.
For this year’s Poppy Appeal, the Royal British Legion is again focusing its support on the Afghan generation of the Armed Forces family, which includes many Yorkshire soldiers from our borough. With the conflict in Afghanistan continuing at its current intensity, it is, I am afraid, almost inevitable there will be many more soldiers who will require the help of the Royal British Legion.
We are rightly very proud of Armed Forces in this borough, so I am asking residents to please support our Armed Forces and support this year’s Poppy Appeal which will commence on October 25.
Additionally, if anyone can offer practical help please contact Beryl Anderson, Scarborough British Legion Poppy Appeal co-ordinator, on (01723) 351957.
Cllr Helen Mallory
Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough
