Stalwart of popular orchestra

I was pleased to see your appreciative account of the life and career of the late Fred Dennis in the Scarborough News.

Obviously, you could not include all Fred’s various interests and activities. May I add a mention of the Kirkbymoorside Baroque Orchestra, which he founded and directed for many years - 20 or more, at a guess. The name of this small band suggests correctly that we played largely unfamiliar music from the 18th century, but fails to convey the pleasure which we, the players, and apparently our audiences (usually, but not invariably, in Pickering Parish Church) derived from this often melodious and expressive music.

Ironically, one of the last works, if not the very last, which Fred conducted with us was Mozart’s Requiem, which the composer is said to have taken for his own Requiem during his final illness.
