Wartime information

I READ with interest your article on the theft of items from the cemetery. It is a sign of the times we live in and a lack of suitable severe punishment for such crimes when and if detected.

However, I note the inscription on the headstone referring to Leading Seaman AC Hick who was gassed off Zeebrugge April 23. I have looked up HMS Ipheginia online and it states this vessel was sunk as a block ship on this date 1918 and I would like any information as to how and what type of gas a naval seaman would come into at sea, and was it delivered by enemy action.
