DERWENT VALLEY LEAGUE: Cayton edge past Nomads in thriller

Cayton 3rds kept their cool to win by just one run at home to Derwent Valley League division B title rivals Valley Bar Nomads, claiming the last wicket with just three balls needed - and the hosts needing just two runs to claim victory.

Ian Dennis top-scored with 34 as the home side were dismissed for just 116, Jim Hunter snapping up 4-15 and fellow veteran Dave Parkinson taking 3-34.

Skipper Rhys Standfield gave Nomads a fighting chance with a knock of 28, but top bowling from Daz Jones, 5-46, and Shaqil Iqbal, 3-21 saw the visitors come up agonisingly short of their target.

This win was crucial as Cayton are second in the table behind leaders Muston 2nds, who suffered a five-wicket loss at home to Thornton Dale 2nds, who could still force their way into the promotion battle.

Pete Bray struck a superb 72 as Muston posted a respectable 162-9, Tom Snowden and Matthew Knowles scooping three wickets apiece for Dale.

Veteran Pat Stephenson hit 48 for Dale, while Paul Waring blasted 56 and Pat’s son Robert Stephenson sealed the win with an undefeated 27.

Snainton’s title push continued with a routine win at struggling Scalby 3rds.

Matt Davies’ unbeaten 27 was the home innings of note as Scalby slumped to 95 all out in the face of fine bowling from Michael Eyre, 3-31, and Ryan Cooper, 3-22.

Carl Wilson’s undefeated 42 wrapped up the 19-point win for the visitors.

Thirteen-year-old Adam Eustace was the star with bat and ball as a youthful Wykeham 3rds side kept their promotion ambitions afloat with a two-wicket home win against lowly Ganton 2nds.

Eustace took 3-28 as Ganton were dismissed for 153, Mark Lockwood hitting 45 and Richard Horsman 37.

Veteran Dan Reardon’s 4-51 sent Wykeham crashing to 76-8 in the 19th over and Ganton seemed to be cruising to victory, but young Eustace and Charlie Wrightson, 20no, shared an unbroken stand of 78 in just 13 overs for the ninth wicket to ensure victory with two wickets and seven overs to spare.

Pacesetters Kirkbymoorside took a massive stride closer to securing promotion to the Beckett League as division A champions with a 115-run win at second-placed Flixton 3rds.

Jamie Harper was the star man for the Moorsiders, he smashed an unbeaten 93 as they posted 239-6, then took 6-18 as the hosts limped to 124-8.

Andy Bayes added a fine 52 and James Blacklock was unbeaten on 34, Joey Harris bagging 3-45 for Flixton.

John Sowden’s unbeaten 57 was the only reason Flixton made it to three figures, but Harper ripped through the batting order to leave the hosts well adrift of their target.

Flixton 2nds will be relieved that their closest challengers for second spot, Nawton Grange 2nds, slumped to a shock 45-run defeat at home to Lockton

The visitors were dismissed for 142, Guy Nattrass their main batsman with 36, Neil Ward and Rory Talling taking three wickets apiece.

Ward then weighed in with 41 but keen bowling from Keith Eddon, 4-33, and George McClaren, 4-17, saw the Grange innings slip to 97 all out.

Kiwi Edwards took 5-44 and Mark Kelly 5-32 as the hosts slipped to 82 all out, Matthew Lickes top scoring with 28.

Edwards then hammered an astonishing 72 not out in Hospitals’ winning total of 83-3.

Forge Valley 3rds batsman Tim Farrant hit 94 but still ended up on the losing side as his team were beaten by three wickets at home to Wold Newton 2nds.
