Wykeham’s unbeaten start to the AndyHire Scarborough Evening Cricket League Division A season was halted by a home defeat against defending champs Staxton last night.
Tom Bruce hit 43 and James Bryant 29 for the pacesetters, spinner Linden Gray bagging 3-23 to peg the hosts back to 116-6.
Jack Holt then sent Staxton crashing to 6-3, also with figures of 3-23, but an unbroken stand of 110 between David Morris, 49no, and Gray, 37no, secured the win for Staxton.
The game between hosts Ebberston and Filey was abandoned four overs into the home side’s reply to Filey’s 143-8 as Ebberston batsman Jonny Mason dislocated his knee while batting and an ambulance was called.
There was a closely-contested encounter at Ganton, with the home side hanging on for a four-run win against visitors Scalby.
Ryan Labuschagne’s superb spell of 5-32, along with 3-18 from Sam Fox helped Scalby dismiss the hosts for 106, Liam Cousins top-scoring with 35.
James Deaves looked to be steering Scalby to victory with his 52 but Sam Carver’s 4-17 allied to 3-13 from all-round hero Cousins saw them dismissed just four runs shy of Ganton’s total.
Heslerton had a much easier time in their home game against basement club Seamer, breezing to a 62-run win.
Stu Pickard top-scored for the home side with 47, veteran Paul Bowes adding 33 and Kristian Wilkinson 25 as they amassed an imposing 187-8, Liam Bennett the top Seamer bowler with 3-38.
Adam Morris’ unbeaten 33 was the only innings of note as an outstanding display of bowling from Paul Kinghorn saw him scoop 5-35 as Seamer made 125-8 in reply.
Flixton remain top of Division B after a comfortable eight-wicket win at Scalby B.
Freddie Schmuck and James Ledden struck 29 apiece as the hosts made 107-5.
Chris Mann, 48, and Stuart Stocks, 41no, wrapped up the win for Flixton.
Wykeham B claimed a thrilling four-wicket win at Sherburn with just two balls remaining.
Craig Sanderson blasted 57 and Dan Simpson 55 as the home side posted 168-6, but fine knocks from Brendan Wilson-McGarry, 48, and John Hoggarth, 37, saw Wykeham claim the dramatic win.
Scarborough suffered a two-run defeat at home to Cloughton despite a powerful 74 from Neil Elvidge.
Ben Luntley’s stunning start to the season continued with a fluent 55 for the villagers and a superb unbeaten 60 from Jack Hakings saw Cloughton reach 146-3.
An unbeaten 28 from Josh Mainprize, along with Elvidge’s fine innings, kept the hosts in touch, but they could only make 144-4.
Cayton claimed a 19-run win at bottom-placed club Seamer B.
Kieran Glave struck 33 as the visitors posted 104-8, Matty Morris taking 3-24 for Seamer, who then limped to 85-8 in reply.
Cayton B are still top of Division C after a nine-wicket home win against struggling Muston.
The three-pronged Cayton bowling attack of Shakil Iqbal, 4-11, Harry Sleep, 3-29, and Lee Pettit, 3-16, saw Muston skittled for 88.
Paul Miller’s unbeaten 50 wrapped up the simple win.
Second-placed Ravenscar also strolled to an eight-wicket victory against a youthful Flixton B outfit.
Carl Sample compiled a patient 43 and Will Hutchinson a considered 38 as the hosts made 114-5.
This proved to be nowhere near enough as opener Adam Graham hammered an unbeaten 57 against an inexperienced Flixton attack which bowled 25 wides.
Cloughton B coasted to an 80-run win at Snainton, mainly thanks to a brilliant 79 from Joel Ramm.
Liam Salt also hammered 56 as the visitors set a total of 155-4.
Snainton never looked like getting anywhere close to this thanks to 3-4 from Luke Atkinson and 3-19 by Craig Lyon, Rob Cook top-scoring with 27.
Staxton B kept their title challenge on track with a 73-run hammering of visitors Valley Bar Nomads.
Brothers Andy and Mark Dove hit 62 and 30 respectively as the hosts made 111-4.
Spinner Mark then took a superb 5-11 as the Nomads sank to 38 all out, Craig Hill weighing in with 3-6 and Will McCulloch 2-11.
Forge Valley beat their B team by a massive 117 runs in a mismatch.
Will Tindall hit 43, Gary Gibson 33 and Lewis Wannop 28 as the A team made 152-7, Luke Calvert the pick of the B team’s attack with 3-30.
James Allison then took 3-4 as Valley’s B team submitted to a dismal 35 all out.
Wykeham C beat visitors Ebberston B by three wickets with just two balls to spare in a dramatic finale.
Dougie Bentley’s 47, along with 32 from Pete Webster gave Ebberston a fighting chance with 133-6, but Jonny Remmer’s unbeaten 29 edged Wykeham to victory.
