The tall bowling all-rounder, was due to play his cricket at North Marine Road in 2020, but the coronavirus pandemic put that on hold and Wainman is relieved that he’s finally signed.

The left-arm bowler told The Scarborough News: “I’m pretty sure I was close to signing for the club last season, but because things didn’t go to plan I went to play for my local team.

“I’ve always enjoyed playing cricket on a Saturday and hopefully things will go well at Scarborough and we can have a really good season.”

Wainman left Yorkshire at the end of the 2018 season and played in the 2019 Minor Counties Trophy for Lincolnshire before joining Warwickshire, initially on a short term contract.

Most cricketers would find leaving the professional game extremely difficult, but Wainman has focused on the positives and is loving life working full-time and playing cricket on a Saturday.

“The hardest part about it was the trialling period that followed, leaving the professional game,” added the former Yorkshire man.

“I accepted that the team at Yorkshire was really strong, and that I maybe stayed a few too many years, but it is what it is and I’m enjoying my Saturday cricket and working a normal job.

“I was lucky to be given an opportunity at Warwickshire and I’ve also been working with Steve (Kirby) at Derbyshire and had it not have been for coronavirus I would have been in the 2nds there attempting to get a contract with the club.”

The former Yorkshire and Warwickshire player is hoping to pass on his knowledge to the young players at North Marine Road across the course of the season.

He added: “Guy (Emmett) has brought quite a few players in to the club and I’d be really happy to pass on any knowledge that I’ve picked up over the years.

“It does sound like a really exciting season and fingers crossed it will go ahead.

“The conversation I had with Pat (Roberts) and Guy is that the club is going through a two to three-year project, with us trying to compete at the top of the league.

“It’s always tricky when new players come together but I’m confident that we will be able to compete and as time goes on we will see how strong we are as a side.”
