MATTY KAY: Root deserves Lions captaincy chance

Joe Root will lead the England Lions out against a touring New Zealand XI, and I think his chance to do so is deserved.

It seems the ECB are looking to groom future England captains at a young age, which is a good way of doing things in my opinion.

They identified Alastair Cook at an early age as a possible replacement for Andrew Strauss, and it seems they like the potential Root is showing.

He seems to have an old head on young shoulders, and shows that maturity at the crease.

He is from the same area as another England and Yorkshire legend, Michael Vaughan, and I expect him to be as good as, if not better than Vaughany.

I wish him all the best in his captaincy and I fully expect him to do a good job with the Lions and then maybe one day the full side.

We experienced a mixed weekend at Scarborough Cricket Club.

We managed to beat Castleford by six wickets on Saturday - Both Jack Holt and Ash Lyth were in fine form for us on the day. Ash has started the season in superb fashion.

We lost to Sheffield Collegiate on Bank Holiday Monday in disappointing fashion.

They weren’t anything flash and they’re a side we should really be beating to be honest.

Their bowlers kept it tight, bowling in and around off stump, and our openers didn’t quite manage to find the right length on a consistent basis.

We finished on 221-9, Mark Tennant hitting 55 and Andrew Simpson adding a typically powerful 35.

Although we only took two wickets, we managed to restrict their scoring and we took it down to the wire.

We face a tough game on Sunday when we play South Northumberland in the KBC Knockout Cup.

We went through to the next round after Sunderland failed to make it down here last weekend.

They had a marathon on up there and wouldn’t have been able to make the trip down, so we are pleased to go into the next round.

We know it will be a tough game, our groundsman John Dodds used to be their groundsman.

He has given us a few details on who to look out for and who their danger men are, and hopefully we can carry that forward.

We still need a 1st XI scorer and a 2nd XI wicket-keeper. Anyone interested should ring the club on 01723 365625.
