Mulgrave coasted to a 124-run victory in the Home Guard Sunday Cup final against Bridlington 3rds thanks to a superb 111 from their captain Andrew Thompson.

Thompson was the driving force behind a stunning 247-4 from their 30 overs at a sun-drenched Forge Valley CC, with an unbeaten 55 from Joe Hinchliffe also helping the Derwent Valley League division A leaders put a youthful Brid bowling attack to the sword.

League newcomers Mulgrave batted first and made a steady start thanks to openers James Newton (17) and Chris Clarkson (19), but after their departure, skipper Andrew Thompson took centre stage, hammering 16 fours and four sixes, including two massive straight drives from the clubhouse end which saw him hit the roof on one of the bungalows near the ground on one occasion and then the porch with the second.

Adding valuable support and making the Brid bowlers and fielders toil in the sweltering heat was youngster Joe Hinchliffe, who cracked six fours and a six in his unbeaten half-century.

Bridlington’s leading bowler was Jack Ibbotson with 2-36 from his six overs.

The gap between the two sides - Brid are mid-table in division B while Mulgrave are top of division A - was clear to see when the Bridlington reply began, as tight bowling from Mulgrave saw Brid get way behind the required run-rate, effectively ending the game as a contest after around 10 overs.

The top scoreer for Brid was 15-year-old number three batsman Frankie Reffold, with 19, while opener Harrison Male - a year younger than Reffold - scored 18, with Dean Welch and Phil Robson hitting 17 and 15 respectively.

The top Mulgrave bowlers were Luke Jackson with 3-33 and Andrew Cass with 2-20 as Mulgrave limped to 123-9 as the cup final petered out after a strong first half of the final.

Graham Newbold, Chairman of the Home Guard Club in Scarborough, presented the trophies at the end of the game with the man of the match award being won by Andrew Thompson for his brilliant 111 runs.

RESULT - Mulgrave 247-4 (Andrew Thompson 111, Joe Hinchliffe 55no, Jack Ibbotson 2-36) beat Bridlington 3rds 123-9 (Frankie Reffold 19, Luke Jackson 3-33, Andrew Cass 2-20) by 124 runs
