Staithes hung on to beat Readers Scarborough Beckett Cricket League Premier Division title rivals Staxton to claim the title on a dramatic final day of the season.
Three teams headed into the final round of games with a chance of scooping the silverware, Staithes slightly ahead of their visitors with Cayton knowing that a full points win at home to Flixton 2nds, allied to a low point-scoring affair at Staithes could see them snatch the title away from both sides.
Staithes must have feared the worst when they were dismissed for only 153 runs, the top scorers for the hosts being Paul Wilson with 44 and Rich Hegarty, 32, as off-spinner Linden Gray, 4-25, and Elliott Cooper, 3-31, looked to have bowled the visitors into a title-winning position.
Staxton skipper Nick Gibson, 55, and Chris Dove, 44, helped the visitors to 116-3 and seemingly on the verge of title glory, but when Dove fell seam bowling duo Simon Bowes and Paul Theaker dried up the runs.
Bowes sparked a remarkable collapse as he snapped up a cracking 5-31 in a title-winning spell as Staxton lost their last seven wickets for just 21 runs, Theaker also taking 4-41.
Staxton finished 16 runs short on 137 in 38.3 overs to spark the title celebrations among the home team, who last won the title in 2010.
Cayton secured second place with a seven-wicket home win against Flixton 2nds.
Adam Ditchburn hit an unbeaten 52 and Stephen Hill 44 as the visitors posted 180-7, Andy Holden rolling back the years to snap up 3-27.
Mike Dennis, 79, capped a fine season by steering his side to victory, assisted by Jake McAleese, 40, and Nick Strangio, 37.
Scalby’s return to Division A was confirmed by their 40-run defeat against Nawton Grange, allied to Forge Valley’s shock eight-wicket win against Ebberston.
Paul Hesp and James Deaves took three wickets each as Grange were dismissed for 151, Mike Wearmouth scoring 31 and Charlie Allott 29.
Apart from Paul Marton’s 25, the Scalby batsmen then succumbed to fine bowling from Nick Thornicroft, 3-13, and James Greenlay, 3-12, as they were all out for 111.
An unbeaten 110 from Tom Brough steered Valley to victory against his old team.
Andy Toal weighed in with 41 as Valley made 171-2 in reply to Ebberston’s 170 all out, B Storry taking 5-33 for the Ayton club.
Damian Readman top scored with 43 for fourth-placed Ebberston, Eddie Swiers remaining unbeaten on 31, Jason Oakley scoring 30 and Ben Lealman 28.
Heslerton finished fifth after a 113-run home win against Filey, Jake Keyworth dismissed four runs short of a deserved century for the victors.
Mal Spaven hit 35 as the villagers posted 228-6, Ben Briggs taking 3-45.
Paul Bowes top scored with an unbeaten 32 against his old team but 3-26 from Andy Slaughter helped dismiss the Clarence Drive club for 115.
Mulgrave pipped Seamer to the Division A title after earning a 48-run win at home to Cayton 2nds.
Andy Thompson struck 64, Mario Spagnuolo 46 and Kieran Noble 42 not out as Mulgrave crucially claimed full batting points with 200-5.
Carl Woodward took four wickets in reply as Cayton made 152-9, the 19-point haul being enough to secure the title for Mulgrave.
Seamer’s Dave Graham struck 120, Darrol Lewis 55 and Gregg Chadwick 58 as they posted 258-3 at Grindale.
The hosts were then dismissed for 125 but the 20-point haul was not enough to earn Seamer the title.
Sherburn’s relegation to Division B was confirmed by their 50-run loss at home to Cloughton.
Chris Malthouse hammered 58 and Glynn Botterill 40 as the visitors made 170-7.
The hosts limped to 120-9 in reply, Jake Dudding taking three wickets for the victors.
Settrington won by 49 runs at home to Wykeham.
George Rounthwaite struck a cracking 87 and Matthew Midgley 54 as the hosts set 218-7 and Wykeham were dismissed for 169 in reply, despite 67 from all-rounder Dave Pearson, Jonty Rounthwaite snapping up four wickets.
Brompton were handed 20 points as visitors Wold Newton cended their match.
Staxton 2nds somewhat made up for their first team’s disappointment by clinching the Division B title thanks to a 94-run home win against Ganton, Dan Bulman leading the way with a superb century.
Bulman’s 101, along with 31 from Craig Hill and Jack Pinder’s 30 boosted the hosts to 221-7, and despite Alistair Limb’s 47 Ganton could only make 127 all out in the face of fine spin bowling from Mark Dove, 5-28.
Thornton Dale had to settle for second spot despite racing to a nine-wicket win against Scalby 2nds.
Ian Farrow took 3-5 and Col Lockwood 3-31 as Scalby slumped to 67 all out and Lewis White’s unbeaten 40 wrapped up the win.
Rich Cooper’s unbeaten 101 helped Ravenscar earn a 23-run win againstForge Valley 2nds, earning the victors third place.
Ivan Kirk chipped in with 43 and A Graham 38 as Ravenscar posted 258-7, Eric Hall and Gary Gibson taking two wickets each.
Fine efforts from Phil Pickard, 66no, Steve Boyes, 63, and Gibson, 50, kept Valley on track, but accurate bowling from Gerald Smith, 3-26, and Freddie Barker, 4-61, saw them dismissed for 235.
Relegated Sewerby 2nds finished the season with a 24-run win against neighbours Bridlington 2nds.
P Davies hit 54 and R Traves 47 as the clifftop club made 196-7, Davies then taking 3-35 as Brid were dismissed for 172.
Fylingdales were awarded 20 points as Scarborough 3rds conceded their fixture at the village club.
Great Habton sealed promotion from Division C with a six-wicket win against champions Ebberston 2nds.
Sam Davies took 4-28 as Ebberston were dismissed for 160, and James Hall, 53, and A Davies, 41, then guided Habton to victory, and the second promotion spot.
Habton were able to seal runners-up spot as Flamborough slipped to a 95-run defeat against Seamer 2nds.
Craig Baker hammered a fantastic unbeaten 120 as Seamer posted 207-2, Joe Tiffany also undefeated on 59.
Tiffany then snapped up 3-10 and Steve Winwood 3-30 as Flamborough’s promotion challenge was halted by their slump to 112 all out.
Cloughton 2nds were edged out by nine runs in a thriller against Ryedale.
Stephen Temple’s 111 saw Ryedale to 178-9, with Liam Salt, Craig Lyon, Sean Exley and Oliver Shepard all taking two wickets apiece.
