Stan’s the man as Scalby 3rds sink Muston 2nds

Experienced all-rounder Stan Jackson smashed an unbeaten 58 and took two wickets in two balls as Scalby 3rds claimed a 48-run win against Muston 2nds in Wednesday’s Murray Brown & Son Cup final at Flixton CC.

On a fine warm evening Scalby 3rds elected to bat first on the excellent Flixton ground prepared by James Brown - the cup sponsor’s son - and lost three early wickets to slip to 17-3, but stalwart Jackson came to the crease and his hard-hitting half-century boosted Scalby’s innings.

All-rounder Jackson hammered nine fours in his thrilling knock, and shared in decent stands with Nabeel Hussain (10) and teenager James Deaves (14no) as the thirds were guided to 133-6 from their 20 overs.

There were some 21 extras in this total conceded by Muston, whose best bowlers were Gary Hanson (2-17) and Scott Orange (2-41).

In reply Muston struggled to push the score on against tight bowling from youngster Deaves and later Jackson (2-15) who took both his wickets from the last two balls of his spell, leaving him on a hat-trick in his next match.

Seam bowler Abhishek Kumar also did a great job with 2-21.

Veterans Stuart Chalmers (16) and Gary Hanson (15) tried their hardest to get the Muston reply going and later Cameron Watson (23no) tried to move the score forward more quickly but at the end of the 20 overs ended on 85-5 some 48 runs short.

Mel Brown - owner of Murray Brown and Son of Flixton who sponsor this competition - presented a man of the match award which he donated as well as a sports voucher donated by “Leading Edge Cricket” to Stan Jackson for his 58no and 2-15.

Mel then presented the trophies to both sides, and League Secretary Bernard Goulding thanked Mel and his company for their continued sponsorship of this competition, also Flixton CC for hosting the final, Tim Farrant and John Flinton for umpiring and Pauline Walmsley and Dave Orram for running the catering facilities at Flixton’s excellent clubhouse for this final as well as James Brown for producing such an excellent wicket for the game.

This final concludes all the Derwent Valley Cricket League’s cup finals for 2013 season.

RESULT - Scalby 3rds 133-6 (Stan Jackson 58no, Gary Hanson 2-17, Scott Orange 2-41) beat Muston 2nds 85-5 (Cameron Watson 23no, Stan Jackson 2-15, Abhishek Kumar 2-21) by 48 runs.
