Flixton 93-2 (Stephenson 54no) beat Staxton 91-8 (M Hunter 3-11, Elvidge 3-15)
Flixton skipper Oli Stephenson hit an unbeaten 54 to take his side to a comfortable win against rivals Staxton in the Hospital Cup Final at North Marine Road tonight.
Stephenson won the toss and decided to let Staxton have a bat first, a decision that immediately paid off for him.
Staxton lost their three top batsmen, Nick Gibson, Rob Pinder and Chris Dove early on, with their innings struggling to get going.
Skipper James Armstrong, 17, Dave Williamson, 13, and Dan Bulman, 13, all did their best to get their side to a competitive total, but tight bowling from the Flixton attack restricted them.
Mikey Hunter’s 3-11 from five overs, Rich Malthouse with 2-16 from five overs, and Ben Elvidge’s 3-15 from a four-over spell, made sure Staxton couldn’t make it to three figures, ending on 91-8 from their 20 overs.
Flixton didn’t need to get out of second gear in their run-chase, and despite losing the early wicket of Stu Stocks to wily veteran Chris Brown, the result was never really in doubt.
Stephenson racked up an unbeaten 54 not out in 51 balls, a knock that included four fours, two sixes and also ran a four on one occasion.
He was supported by Leigh Franks, 20 not out, and Scott Cooper, 10, as Flixton made it to 93-2.
Stephenson hit a six to seal the victory and ending a one-sided affair.
