YORK SENIOR LEAGUE: Defeats for Driffield and Beverley

The home side’s final pair got the winning runs, despite a five-wicket haul from Jonny Anderson, who almost did enough to clinch the result for Driffield.

Luke Ramsay’s 38 was the highest total in Driffield’s 212, as Clifton’s David Friend picked up an impressive return of 3-14.

But a century from Scott Hopkinson (117) handed the initiative to the visitors and meant Driffield drop a place to fourth.

A partnership of 123 between Andrew Burton (74 not out) and Robert Fish (59) gave Beverley 1sts a lifeline after they had fallen to an alarming 29-5 against Sessay.

The duo performed a key role in getting Town up to 175-9, despite Stephen Pierse collecting 4-31.

Sessay were able to pick up a seven-wicket win though, with Matthew Till plundering 82 and Nick Harrison unbeaten on 55.

Pickering were held to a draw by Hull Zingari, who picked up valuable points in their battle against relegation.

Dan Ward (69) and Craig Aconley (49) were in form as Pickering reached 251-9 as Matthew Bunn and Matthew Wilkinson shared seven wickets.

Pickering couldn’t find a way to bowl out the Hull side and Sam Fuller made 85 as they finished on 190-8.

In Division One, Pocklington discovered why Whitkirk have led the pack for most of the season.

Their bowlers suffered as the unbeaten leaders built up a massive 314-3, going on to win by 244 runs.

Matthew Webb (100) and Simon Webb (84) made 179 together and there was also 65 not out from Sam Parker.

Batting didn’t look so easy after tea and Whitkirk’s Ben Danby took a hat-trick in his 5-30. Michael O’Brien took three wickets as Alex Downey offered the only resistance with a spirited 43 as Pock were skittled for just 70.

Malton and Old Malton remain their nearest rivals after beating fourth-placed Folkton and Flixton by six wickets.

Anthony Stones’ knock of 64 was the high point of Flixton’s 207-6 before Malton’s Shaun Harland took centre stage, hitting an unbeaten century as hi side made it four wins in a row.

Gary Hall added valuable support with 40.

Harrogate 2nds remain in the promotion shake-up after easing past Bridlington.

George Owram (55) and Cameron O’Donnell (45) were the stand-out performers as the hosts made 225-9 at St George’s Road, with Bridlington’s Sam Edmundson taking 4-46.

Bridlington could only get to 121 in the second innings, as Ali-Hasan Ahmed helped himself to 4-22.

Scott Cooper smashed 91 not out as Sewerby made the most of their short trip to Hornsea.

The hosts batted first and Jonathan Fisher landed their top score with 78 as Steve Janney’s 4-39 bowled Hornsea out for 184.

Three wickets each for Robert Mewburn and Richard Medforth meant the run chase was in the balance for long periods, but Mike Artley made 38, and Cooper was at the crease at the final, as Sewerby picked up a maximum 30 points with a two-wicket win.

Hosts Selby put distance between themselves and the sides’ battling to avoid relegation when they beat Beverley Town 2nds in a low scoring contest.

The visitors were restricted to 148-9 with only Peter Parnaby getting beyond 30 as Gareth Roberts (3-27) and Joe Romaniw (3-26) kept a tight grip on proceedings.

Alex Nightingale (3-25) attempted to do the same but Alex Bowden (47) and Matthew Hoyle (54) were able to set up a victory for the home side by six wickets.

In Division Two, Scarborough 2nds’ Charlie Roberts ran out of partners as his side fell 19 runs short at Clifton Alliance 2nds.

He was left stranded, unbeaten on 80, as Scarborough were all out for 177.

Earlier, Matthew Watson had ripped through Clifton’s middle order, taking 5-49, including the wicket of Clifton’s top scorer Jamie Butt (60).

Pickering 2nds won by three wickets at Hemingbrough after Welburn’s 7-26 had dismissed the hosts for 172, while Malton and Old Malton 2nds held on for a draw against Carlton Towers, their last pair surviving to see them through to 162-9, chasing 180.
