Ayton Reserves have resigned from the Scarborough News Saturday League third division just a week ahead of the big kick-off.
Club committee member Geoff Osguthorpe, who helped run the team last season, said: “The committee, and myself personally, are saddened by the fact we had to pull one of the sides out of the league.
“It’s even more disappointing after all the hard work put in to complete last season from the position at Christmas when both sides looked set to fold.”
After having someone in place to run both teams Ayton were unable to find anyone committed who would run one of the sides.
Osguthorpe added: “The club has suitable people around who would have been ideal for the job - but sadly work and other commitments has prevented them from being able to take it on.
“It seems to be a current pandemic in local football at the moment that there is not the level or number of people who can or are willing to commit to running sides anymore.
“The result of this has been the reduction of sides in both Saturday and Sunday local football in the area over recent years.
“ I am disappointed with the decline of the Ayton Saturday football in recent years, hopefully regrouping can be done this year with a view to putting some solid foundations in place to move the club forward.”
