Hosts United pressed and probed as Boro sat deep and tried to remain compact, with a few half-chances going begging as the sides went in level at the break.

Ex FC United midfielder Kieran Glynn enjoyed a rare sighting of the home side's goal just after the break, but he fired a tame effort straight at keeper Dan Lavercombe.

Linney was then slotted through down the right, but he saw his low drive comfortably palmed away by Whitley.

A rash lunge from Luke Griffiths on Glynn then saw the hosts reduced to 10 men as he was shown a straight red card.

The home side continued to have the better of the chances, despite being a man light, but Boro defended well to keep United at bay.

Ryan Watson, Bailey Gooda and Ashley Jackson all went into the book for strong challenges while United sub Dan Cockerline fired a tame effort straight at Whitley when he ought to have done better and Boro held on to come away with a point.
