Boro cruise to Radcliffe win

Scarborough Athletic swept away a home banana skin on Saturday when they produced the most comfortable of 2-0 wins against Radcliffe Borough.

Boro collected the three points at a canter, with the visitors only creating one opportunity in the 90 minutes of action.

Tom Corner was the attacking star of the show with a brace of goals, but the whole team produced a performance that truely underlined their ambitions.

It was vital that Bryan Hughes and Paul Foot’s men collected the win ahead of a huge week for the club and immediately it became clear that this would never be in doubt.

In fact, it took Corner just six minutes to break the deadlock, swiftly ending a two-game drought for Boro.

The big striker collected a throughball, drew the keeper and then poked neatly into the bottom corner of the net.

After this flyer, the game stalled into walking pace, though Boro controlled the play without breaking sweat.

It took until the 37th minute for Boro to underline this dominance by creating another opportunity.

It was Corner once again, who wriggled free in the box and bent an effort that smacked against the bar and bounced to safety.

The whistle followed soon after and a rousing half-time chat immediately woke Boro from their slumber.

The ball fell to Corner six yards out with just seconds played, but he failed to judge his shot and it skewed away for a goal-kick.

Corner made no mistake soon after though. Ryan Blott’s shot was blocked on the line, but Corner popped up on the near post and rolled it under Chris Cheetham in the Radcliffe goal.

Blott then set up the lively Cameron Murray, but he was denied by a fine saving tackle.

Then Boro shut off for a few seconds and Radcliffe almost took advantage when Matthew Davies found some space in the area. The midfielder’s composure vanished though and he smashed the ball into the car-park behind the goal.

Chances continued to come thick and fast for Boro and Corner was so unlucky not to leave the ground with the match-ball when he was brilliantly denied by Cheetham. The Radcliffe stopper wasn’t done there, as he pushed away James Bennett’s rebound.

Then, after Blott miskicked from six yards out, Corner found himself with a clear shot, but he failed to squeeze his effort through the wall of bodies on the line.

Blott almost broke his duck when a clever turn allowed him some freedom, but his floated chip sailed just over the bar.

The three points was clearly in the bag when ref Mark Swift brought the proceedings to an end. But now attentions switch to a much tougher time.

This victory will provide the perfect tonic for Boro though as they head into Tuesday night’s clash at Farsley and then another six-pointer at home to Bamber Bridge next weekend.
