Boro held by Clipstone

Scarborough Athletic came away from Clipstone on Tuesday night with a 1-1 friendly draw.

A Jordan Thewlis goal levelled things up for Boro, who fielded former Hull City youngster Danny Chambers in attack.

Thewlis took advantage of a neat returned ball from midfielder James Bennett to give Boro a share of the spoils.

The result against the NCEL first division team may not have been ideal, but boss Rudy Funk came away a happy man.

He said: “It was a decent game against big, strong opposition.

“We had about 15 chances to score, but we could only put one away, which is sometimes how it goes.

“Overall it was a fabulous work-out for the lads. We showed discipline, work-rate and superb concentration levels.”

There was some disappointing news for Boro fans on the night though, as they learned that next Tuesday’s friendly at home to Mansfield Town had been cancelled.

The Stags have opted to take up the option of taking on Championship side Leeds United instead of playing Boro.

Funk said: “We were all looking forward to it, but sometimes other things dictate the pace.

“It isn’t often that teams get the opportunity to play a team like Leeds United, so we wish Mansfield well and move on.

“There will be no game to replace it because it is a little late now. We will have a training session instead and look forward to the rest of our pre-season.”

Boro starting XI: White, Middleton, Lamplough, Foot, Plummer, Davidson, Ghaichem, Bolder, Chambers, Thomas, Williams.
