Boro set to tackle the young guns

Scarborough Athletic bosses Bryan Hughes and Paul Foot will be taking full advantage of a free midweek on Tuesday night.

They will be casting their eye over a game between the Boro first team and the club’s under-19s at Dene Park in Hull from 7pm.

The joint-managers are using the session to undertake valuable preparatory work on their own squad, as well as judging the potential of the club’s young starlets.

Defenders Jamie Stewart and Jordan Oliver have both been blooded this season as the club’s hierarchy look to the future.

Hughes said: “It is a great chance for us to build for Saturday’s game against Bamber Bridge and have a look at the under-19s.

“The biggest thing is to see the club’s youngsters, give them the experience of playing against the first team and also showing them the level they have to reach.

“As we go forward I think it is important that we train together and do more with the under-19s so it isn’t so alien to them when they push on towards the first team.

“Hopefully that will make the trainsition easier when thy come into the changing room for the first time.

“I have been a pro footballer all of my life, having been moved into the first-team squad at the age of 17. I was always told that if you are good enough you are old enough.

“At the moment we haven’t seen enough of them and we are keen to see what the future brings.

“We have shown by throwing in Jamie and Jordan that we are not afraid to do it.

“I spoke to the manager Steve Roberts, he recommended those lads and we trusted his judgement.”

Hughes added: “We would like to thank Hull United’s Jamie Waltham, who is a big friend of our club. He has given us access to their ground at Dene Park and full use of the facilities.”
