Boss Roberts keen to boost under-21s

Scarborough Athletic under-21s boss Steve Roberts is looking to utilise the cream of the area’s youngsters.

Former Pickering Town, Cayton and Ayton attacker Roberts has taken the reins of the newly-formed under-21s following the folding of the under-19s.

The Boro team are poised to join the Under-21 Elite Yorkshire League, which will see them coming up against teams from Harrogate Town and Harrogate Railway.

They will play their matches in mid-week, so players could turn out for them and Saturday League sides.

The team will also be watched closely by Boro first team management duo Bryan Hughes and Paul Foot, as they are allowed to field up to three over-age players in each match.

Roberts said: “This season we have set up a under-21 team to follow on from our under-18s, which will allow progression towards the first team.

“We have had a few managers recommending players to us, but if there are any lads out there who fancy a go or if people think they are good enough, we want them to get in touch.

“It won’t be a case of taking Saturday League players off teams because our games are played in midweek, so they could turn-out for both.

“There will be a very close link-up with the first team managers as well, they will be coming to watch quite a few of our games.

“In this league you are able to field three over-age players, so if the first team has a player they want nursing back from injury or if a player hasn’t had too many minutes, they can have a run-out for us.

“It will give the younger lads the chance to play alongside experienced players, as well as having the chance to impress Paul and Bryan.”
