Bull had been out for a coffee with the former Scarborough FC chairman only a few weeks ago, just before the current coronavirus lockdown.

"This is very sad news, John was a key figure for both Scarborough FC and Scarborough Athletic and it is a huge loss for football in this town as he put a massive amount of time and effort into both clubs.

"When we first came back to play at the Flamingo Land Stadium he was at most home games.

"I had met up with him for a coffee only a week or two before the lockdown, he had been our president up until last year when he stepped down as he could not make it to as many games as he wanted, shortly after this we made him a life member of the club.

"He was always there on the other end of the phone if I needed any advice about matters to do with Boro as he had experienced it all during his time as chairman, vice chairman and a club director at Scarborough FC. He was chairman when Boro won against Stafford Rangers at Wembley in the Trophy final in 1976."

Bull added: "He said before we met up for the coffee that he was bringing a surprise along for me.

"When we sat down, he brought out this old leather Scarborough FC bag which the directors used to carry all their papers and other things to games in, he felt it was good for me to have it."
