Ex-Spireites boss leaves Portsmouth for Wigan

Paul Cook has today joined Wigan Athletic from Portsmouth - weeks after winning the League Two title at Fratton Park.

Cook won the same title in 2013/14 with Chesterfield and took the Spireites to the League One play-off semi-finals the following season before leaving for Pompey in 2015.

Portsmouth made it to the play-offs in his first season before sealing promotion and the division championship on the last day of last season with a 6-1 win over Cheltenham.

And now Cook is on the move again, from Portsmouth to Wigan, who he had two spells at during his playing career and signing a three-year deal at the fellow League One club.

Leam Richardson has followed Cook to Wigan from Pompey. The pair had previously worked together at Accrington Stanley and Chesterfield.

Cook, 50, said: “Wigan was my first club back in the day when Harry McNally had us all and it’s been great to see the club go on to the achievements it’s had in the past few years and that’s great credit to the managers and the chairman. The club’s come a long, long way from them days and hopefully my job now will be to try and take us back up the pyramid.”
