Filey Town Reserves won 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out at York League side Malton & Norton Reserves in the Scarborough & District FA Junior Cup.
In a scrappy game, the hosts had most of the possession in the first half of the third-round tie and the majority of the chances, so it was against the run of play that Town took the lead on 23 minutes when Martin Cappleman headed in from a corner.
Ten minutes before the interval Malton levelled, also from a corner, despite strong appeals from Filey that the ball had been handled on its way past keeper Lee Eblet.
Town started slowly in the second half but soon began to create a few chances, Martin Cappleman and Jordan Powell both going close with headers.
Neither side managed to break the stalemate in 90 minutes so the game went to penalties, with Billy Coyne scoring the opener for Filey and player-boss Eblet saving the home side’s first spot-kick.
Martin Cappleman, Powell, Lewis Adams and Lee Cappleman then scored to complete a 5-4 win for the visitors.
Eblet picked out Martin Cappleman as his side’s man of the match.
