Franks, who has joined from Harrogate Town, will also skipper the side next season and he can’t wait to pull on the Scarborough Athletic shirt.

Franks, from Hunmanby, said: “It’s great to join Scarborough Athletic and get to play for my home town team. I want to help the club get to a higher level and that’s what we’ll all be working towards in pre-season and in the games ahead.

“I supported Scarborough FC when they were in the Conference and used to play for the Centre of Excellence when I was a teenager, so I know the recent history of the club and some of the fans from the old club who still support Scarborough Athletic.”

Boro bosses Paul Foot and Bryan Hughes have moved quickly to replace departing centre-back Dean Lisles, who left the club to re-join North Ferriby United last week.

Franks, who made the big move to Huddersfield from Bridlington Town back in 2007, is honoured to be taking the captain’s armband.

He added: “It’s fantastic to be given the captaincy by Bryan and Paul for next season; they have shown their faith in me and I will be aiming to set an example and lead from the front.

“When I sat down with them it was evident that Bryan and Paul are striving for success at the club, they are both clear about their vision for Scarborough Athletic going forward and I can’t wait for it all to begin.”

Joint boss Bryan Hughes is delighted with the signing of Franks.

The former Hull City and Charlton Athletic man said: “Leigh ticks all the boxes for us. He has an affinity to Scarborough but he has also played higher up the pyramid.

“He is a commanding centre-back who reads the game well and is strong in the tackle. Leigh is a leader on and off the pitch which is why we have appointed him captain for the forthcoming season.”
